What Is MAP in Telecom?

MAP (Mobile Application Part) is the SS7 layer for mobile network functions. MAP carries location updates, SMS routing and HLR queries.

MAP defines the operations mobile cores send each other. SRI-SM asks where to deliver an SMS. UpdateLocation tells the HLR a handset has moved. Every HLR lookup is a MAP operation sent across SS7.
