What Is a Line Type?

Line type is the kind of service behind a phone number: mobile, landline or VoIP. Line type decides whether a number accepts SMS.

Line Type in Practice

An SMS sent to a landline arrives as text-to-speech or not at all. A dialer set for mobiles wastes attempts on fixed lines. The numbering range sets the first reading of line type. The US allows fixed-to-mobile porting, so a US reading needs the MNP answer.
