What Is an MSISDN?

MSISDN stands for Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number. The MSISDN is a mobile subscription's full phone number in E.164 form.

MSISDN in Practice

The MSISDN is the number people dial. The IMSI on the SIM identifies the subscription inside the network. The HLR maps one to the other, so calls and SMS reach the right SIM. Porting and SIM replacement change the IMSI behind an MSISDN while the number stays the same.
